Electrification Takes on Extreme Terrain

Scania and Prinoth are taking battery-electric technology into one of off-road mobility’s toughest environments — steep, freezing and snow-covered terrain.

Electrification Takes on Extreme Terrain

Scania and Italian snow-groomer manufacturer Prinoth have signed a long-term partnership to expand the electrification of heavy-duty snow grooming, extending their collaboration from the Husky E-Motion to the newly introduced Leitwolf E-Motion.

Both machines will use Scania’s Core 800 battery packs. The 97 kWh lithium-ion system features liquid cooling, advanced safety architecture and a proprietary Battery Management System, with modular configurations ranging from 21 kWh to 624 kWh.

The application is particularly demanding. Snow groomers operate in very low temperatures, steep terrain and heavy snow while facing substantial vibration and high power requirements. The Leitwolf E-Motion uses Core 800 packs in both top and side orientations to meet its higher energy and power demands.

The partnership builds on the Husky E-Motion, introduced in 2022 and described by Scania as the world’s first market-ready fully electric snow groomer. Its Core 800 battery has been in use since 2023 across markets including Norway, France, Italy, the UK and the United States.

Why It Matters:

Electrification is moving beyond conventional road vehicles. When batteries can deliver reliable performance in extreme off-road conditions, the potential application landscape expands significantly — from snow grooming to mining, construction and agriculture.
