The Man Behind the Trident

Alfieri Maserati helped turn family engineering passion into racing legend.

The Man Behind the Trident

On 23 September 1887, Alfieri Maserati was born in Voghera, Italy, into a family that would become one of motoring’s most celebrated dynasties. He entered the automotive world alongside his brothers, working with Isotta Fraschini before becoming an official racing driver and technical specialist. In 1914, Alfieri and his brother Ettore established an engineering and assistance workshop in Bologna, laying the foundations for Maserati.

After the First World War, the brothers increasingly focused on transforming production cars into competition machines. Alfieri’s engineering expertise helped produce the Tipo 26, Maserati’s first racing car bearing the marque’s name, which debuted in 1926. The company soon became a formidable force in European motorsport, competing successfully in events including the Targa Florio and Grand Prix racing.

The famous Trident emblem, inspired by Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune, was designed by Alfieri’s artist brother Mario. More than a century later, it remains one of automotive history’s recognisable symbols.
