The International Road Transport Union (IRU) and bp are joining forces to advance public charging infrastructure for electric trucks, linking bp’s charging network with the operational needs of commercial road transport.
Under the partnership, bp’s public electric-truck charging network will be integrated into IRU’s interactive heavy-duty vehicle charging map. The aim is to help operators identify available infrastructure and plan electric-truck routes with greater confidence.
The collaboration will also draw practical insights from IRU’s network representing more than 3.5 million road transport operators worldwide, feeding into IRU’s work on the total cost of ownership of battery-electric vehicles.
The timing is significant. As electric trucks move into commercial operations, charging availability, route planning and operating economics are becoming increasingly interconnected. IRU has previously highlighted the challenges created by insufficient heavy-duty charging infrastructure for long-distance operations.
Why It Matters:
The next stage of truck electrification is about operational certainty. Charging infrastructure becomes commercially valuable when operators can see it, plan around it and understand its impact on fleet economics.
