SCANIA OPENS SEK 975M R&D TESTING GROUND

Scania’s new proving ground in Sweden strengthens TRATON GROUP’s capabilities in electrification, autonomous transport and vehicle safety.

SCANIA OPENS SEK 975M R&D TESTING GROUND

Scania has inaugurated an SEK 975 million research and development (R&D) proving ground in Södertälje, Sweden, creating a dedicated environment to test and validate future transport technologies under controlled, realistic conditions.

Covering approximately 85 hectares, the facility features 13 kilometres of paved roads and four kilometres of gravel roads. It supports development across electrification, autonomous systems, active safety, vehicle dynamics and conventional vehicle technologies.

The inauguration on 19 October 2026 reflected the facility’s purpose. Rather than a traditional ribbon-cutting, Scania marked the opening by sending a range of vehicles onto the test tracks.

Dedicated areas allow engineers to assess braking performance across different road-surface conditions, test advanced driver assistance systems and construct increasingly complex scenarios for autonomous driving. The facility also enables testing previously conducted at external sites.

The investment strengthens the wider TRATON GROUP’s R&D infrastructure, helping its brands turn emerging technologies into validated transport solutions.

Why It Matters

As commercial vehicles become more electrified, connected and automated, controlled testing environments are critical to validating safety and performance before technologies reach customers. Scania’s new facility expands that capability within the TRATON GROUP.
