Proper oil priming is critical when installing a new turbocharger.
Turbocharger failures are among the most costly unplanned repairs in heavy-duty fleets. In many cases, the root cause is not component quality but installation procedure ??? specifically, skipping oil priming before first start-up. When a new or rebuilt turbo is fitted without proper priming, the bearings can run dry for the first few seconds of operation. That brief period is enough to cause micro-scoring and premature failure within weeks. Workshops should always follow the manufacturer priming procedure: fill the oil feed line, rotate the compressor wheel by hand, and crank the engine without starting until oil pressure is confirmed.
