More than 500,000 electric trucks and buses were sold worldwide in 2025, with sales surging 86% year on year, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). The growth marks the second consecutive year of near-doubling, driven largely by China's rapidly expanding electric truck market.
China remained the dominant force, with 457,000 zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold in 2025, up 98% from the previous year. The shift also signals a changing global market, with electric trucks gaining ground alongside the established electric bus segment.
The ICCT's global monitor covers 34 countries representing around 80% of global truck and bus sales and 99% of zero-emission truck and bus sales, providing a broad view of adoption across major markets.
Why It Matters
The scale of growth suggests commercial vehicle electrification is entering a more consequential phase. For fleets, manufacturers and component suppliers, accelerating electric truck adoption will increasingly reshape vehicle technology, charging infrastructure and aftermarket requirements.
