Scania Industrial Batteries has been selected as the preferred battery partner for MacLean Engineering, strengthening the push towards battery-electric underground mining vehicles. Under the strategic agreement, Scania will supply its Core 800 battery packs for MacLean's electric vehicle platform.
The 97 kWh Core 800 delivers a nominal voltage of 691 V, supported by advanced thermal management and Scania's battery management system. The technology is designed to meet demanding requirements for safety, reliability and maintainability underground.
Scania already has more than 2,000 battery systems operating in underground mines worldwide, supporting powertrains from 400 to 800 volts and energy capacities ranging from 21 to 768 kWh.
The partnership follows an extensive technical and safety evaluation, with particular attention to battery performance, regulatory compliance and measures designed to reduce arc-flash risks during maintenance.
Why it matters: The collaboration highlights how high-voltage battery technology is moving beyond road transport, enabling mining operators to reduce diesel dependence, emissions and fuel costs without compromising heavy-duty performance.
