WHY THIS MATTERS

Every journey begins somewhere: A doorstep. A street corner. A station. A warehouse.

And almost every journey eventually meets the road.

For most of us, that is where mobility lives. Cars move through traffic. Buses fill and empty. Trucks carry goods between cities. Two-wheelers slip through the gaps.

But roads have a limit.

Congestion consumes time. Distance consumes time. Geography can consume even more.

Sometimes the destination is not far away.

The journey is.

That is where a new idea is beginning to take shape: Advanced Air Mobility, or AAM.


NASA describes AAM as a future air-transport system designed to move people and goods in highly automated aircraft, including electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles, across towns, between neighbouring cities and to locations commonly reached today by road. The intriguing part is not simply that these aircraft can fly. It is what flying could change about the journey.


WHEN THE ROAD ISN'T ENOUGH

Imagine a city at rush hour. The road is full. Cars inch forward. Buses wait at junctions. Delivery vehicles search for gaps. A journey that looks short on a map stretches with every signal, every bottleneck and every intersection.

Now move beyond the city. A community may be relatively close to a major centre, yet mountains, water, poor road connections or sheer distance can make the journey disproportionately long.

The road cannot simply rise above itself. The sky can.

NASA's research sees AAM as an additional dimension of transportation—operating above cars, buses and trains and potentially providing more direct journeys across cities and between nearby communities. That does not mean replacing the road. It means adding another layer to mobility.

THE JOURNEY GOES UP

What if your next shortcut didn't turn left or right—but up? The journey could begin as it always has: on the road. Then, instead of joining the traffic ahead, you enter a vertiport and rise above it. The city changes beneath you. Roads become lines. Junctions become patterns. The traffic remains below.

And then, somewhere beyond the congestion, the journey returns to the ground.

Road → Air → Road.

This may be the more interesting promise of electric air mobility. Not a world without roads. A world where the road is one part of the journey.

NASA is exploring how AAM could connect with existing airports, heliports, public-transport facilities and purpose-built vertiports. The FAA likewise expects early operations to make use of existing infrastructure where possible, alongside new vertiports and vertistops. The journey, in other words, does not leave the ground behind. It simply changes altitude for a while.

WHO COULD BENEFIT?

The first beneficiaries may not be the people making the most spectacular journeys. They may be the people for whom time, access or geography is the real problem. A commuter could cross a congested urban region more directly. A regional traveller could connect two neighbouring cities without spending hours on the highway.

A remote community could gain another connection to essential services. An emergency aircraft could reach a difficult location without waiting for a road to clear. A cargo operator could move time-sensitive goods between selected points where speed matters more than volume. These are not promises of a mass-market service tomorrow. They are potential applications being actively researched and tested.


NASA identifies passenger transport, cargo delivery and public-service missions among the potential uses of AAM. The FAA likewise includes passenger and cargo operations, firefighting and search-and-rescue applications in its AAM framework. In July 2026, the FAA reported an eVTOL test flight transporting a medical organ from Virginia to Maryland—a small but tangible example of how specialised applications could begin to emerge.

The point is not that the future has arrived. It is that the first pieces are being tested in the real world.

THE SKY NEEDS A GROUND

There is an irony here. The more we talk about flying, the more important the ground becomes. An aircraft needs somewhere to land. Passengers need somewhere to arrive. Cargo needs somewhere to transfer. Energy needs to be available. Roads, railways and public transport need to connect with the new service. And communities need to accept another form of activity above their neighbourhoods.

That is why AAM is not simply an aircraft story. It is an ecosystem story.

NASA's work covers vertiports, vehicle and infrastructure design, automation, noise and airspace integration. The FAA is developing vertiport standards and working on the safe integration of powered-lift aircraft into the national airspace system.

ICAO similarly describes AAM as an emerging aviation ecosystem rather than a single technology. The aircraft may be airborne. The mobility system remains firmly on the ground.

NOT ROAD VERSUS AIR

Perhaps that is the most important distinction. The future of mobility is unlikely to be a contest in which one mode simply defeats another. Roads will remain. Rail will remain. Airports will remain. Public transport will remain. AAM could become another option within that network. One journey may favour a bus. Another, a train. Another, a truck. And another may eventually make sense as:

Road → Air → Road.

The real innovation may therefore be not the aircraft itself, but the connection between modes.

WHEN MOBILITY BECOMES THREE-DIMENSIONAL

For centuries, everyday mobility has largely followed the contours of the ground. We built roads around hills. Bridges across rivers. Tunnels through mountains. Railways between cities.

Then aviation gave us a different perspective. AAM asks whether that third dimension can become more closely woven into everyday journeys.

  • Shorter routes.
  • New connections.
  • Different access points.

A mobility network that is no longer entirely horizontal.

But the question is not:

Can we fly?

Humanity answered that long ago. The more interesting question is:

CAN WE MAKE FLYING PART OF EVERYDAY MOBILITY?

That answer will depend on aircraft, infrastructure, airspace, safety, energy, economics and public acceptance. But ultimately, it will depend on something much simpler:

Does it make the journey better?

Because mobility is not really about vehicles.

It is about getting somewhere.

And sometimes, the best way forward may not be along the road.
