WHY THIS MATTERS

  • Autonomous freight is moving steadily from controlled trials towards commercial operations. But the arrival of highly automated trucks raises a question that technology alone cannot answer:
  • If the truck learns to drive, what happens to the driver?
  • The answer may not be disappearance. It may be transformation.

THE QUESTION IS CHANGING

For years, autonomous trucking has been discussed largely as a technology story: sensors, artificial intelligence, connectivity and automated control.

But commercialisation changes the question. SAE Level 4 automation is designed to perform the driving task within a defined operational domain without requiring a human to take control. That means autonomy is unlikely to arrive everywhere at once. It is more likely to begin on predictable routes, between designated hubs and under carefully defined operating conditions.

That creates an important transition. The industry may not move directly from human-driven trucks to driverless trucks. It may pass through an extended period in which human responsibility and machine control coexist.

THE DRIVER MAY CHANGE, NOT DISAPPEAR

A professional driver does far more than steer, accelerate and brake. Drivers manage uncertainty. They assess road conditions, deal with customers, respond to unexpected situations, understand their vehicles and make decisions when the planned journey does not go according to plan.

Automation progressively takes over some of these tasks. The human role can therefore shift from controlling the vehicle to supervising the system and managing the exceptions. And that is where the idea of the new driver begins.

THE NEW DRIVER?

From Driver to Mobility Professional

If autonomous trucks become commercially viable, the most important workforce change may not be the disappearance of the driving profession—but its redefinition. A driver could evolve into an autonomous vehicle operator, monitoring system status, understanding operational boundaries and responding when human intervention is required.

Another pathway could lead to the fleet supervisor, overseeing several autonomous vehicles, coordinating operations and managing situations that fall outside normal parameters. Experienced drivers could become safety mentors or trainers, transferring something machines cannot easily acquire from software updates: accumulated knowledge of roads, weather, traffic behaviour, vehicle handling and real-world freight operations.

Others could move towards autonomous vehicle technician roles, combining traditional commercial-vehicle knowledge with expertise in electronics, sensors, software, connectivity, diagnostics and high-voltage systems.

The emerging workforce could therefore include:

  • Autonomous Vehicle Operators
  • Fleet Supervisors
  • Exception Managers
  • Autonomous Vehicle Technicians
  • Safety & Compliance Specialists
  • Trainers & Human-Factors Mentors

The skill set changes accordingly. Traditional driving expertise would increasingly sit alongside digital literacy, systems awareness, data interpretation, remote monitoring, exception management, cybersecurity awareness, safety assurance and human-machine interaction.

The transition could be viewed as a four-stage workforce journey:

RESKILL
Equip existing drivers with new digital and systems capabilities.

UPSKILL
Develop advanced competencies in supervision, diagnostics, safety and decision-making.

REDEPLOY
Create pathways into fleet operations, control centres, training and technical roles.

RECERTIFY
Develop new competency standards for people working with autonomous vehicles.

The objective is not simply to teach people to work around autonomous trucks.

It is to develop people who can work intelligently with them.

THE FLEET EQUATION

For fleet operators, workforce transformation will ultimately be linked to economics. Autonomous trucks could potentially increase vehicle utilisation on suitable routes, alter operating patterns and reduce the need for a human driver to remain continuously behind the wheel. But those gains will have to be weighed against the costs of autonomous systems, infrastructure, supervision, maintenance, insurance, training and new workforce capabilities.

The business case will therefore depend not simply on how much driving can be automated, but on how efficiently humans and machines can divide the work.

THE HUMAN FACTOR

Freight will remain an inherently human system even when driving becomes increasingly automated. Someone will still be responsible for the vehicle. Someone will still manage exceptions. Someone will still understand the customer, the cargo and the operating environment. And someone will still have to decide what happens when reality falls outside the parameters programmed into the machine.

Automation may reduce the amount of human intervention required. It does not eliminate the need for human responsibility.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

The future of autonomous trucking should therefore not be measured only by how many trucks can drive themselves. It should also be measured by how successfully the industry can transform the people who work with those trucks.

The most experienced drivers may become some of the most valuable people in the transition—not because they know how to operate a steering wheel, but because they understand the unpredictable world in which the steering wheel has always been used.

The industry will need to decide how that knowledge is transferred, how new competencies are developed and how existing workers are given pathways into the emerging mobility workforce.
